EDDIE FOSTER

Eddie Foster's triple leads the Sox
to a 10th inning victory

May 26, 1922 ... Eddie Foster's triple and a single by Muddy Ruel in the 10th inning, put across the winning run and gave the Red Sox a 7 to 6 victory over the Athletics. Three innings before, Tilly Walker had tied up the score with a home run over the left field fence.

Earlier in the game, the two teams alternated back and forth with the lead. The Red Sox jumped out front for two innings, then trailed for the next three, only to go back in front again in the sixth and run neck and neck from the seventh until the end.

The Sox started the game as if it was going to be a runaway. In the first inning, the Nemo Leibold led off with a single to center. Mike Menosky singled to right and Joe Harris bounced back to the pitcher, who threw out Leibold trying to go to third. Del Pratt then doubled to left to score Menosky with Harris staying at third-base. Joe Dugan's grounder back to Rommel resulted in Harris being caught in a rundown between third and home. But John Collins came through with a single to left that scored Pratt, giving the Red Sox a 2 to 0 lead.

Then in the next inning Ruel led off with a double and went to third when Bennie Karr grounded out, but then he was run down between third and home on Leibold's ball back to the pitcher. Menosky lined a triple to deep right field that scored Leibold, but he was stranded at third when Harris grounded out.

The 3 to 0 lead looked fine for only a few minutes. Joe Dugan first bobbled a grounder by Chick Galloway, the first man up for the Athletics in the third inning. Pinch-hitter Joe Hauser, batting for Rommel, singled to right and Ralph Young laid down a sacrifice bunt that Foster juggled, to load the bases. Doc Johnston scored two runners with a single to left and Tillie Walker ran a bunt through shortstop that brought home Young to tie up the score. Bing Miller then brought Johnston and Walker home with a single to left. At that point Sox starter, Bennie Karr left and Curt Fullerton came into pitch. He walked the first batter he faced and then Jimmy Dykes hit a line drive to Pratt, that doubled Miller off third-base.

With the Athletics up 5 to 3, Ray Moore was sent in to hold the lead and did so until the sixth inning. Then he walked both Foster and Reul, the first two batters to face him. Roxy Walters came in to bat for Fullerton and dropped down a perfect bunt, moving the two runners up a base. George Burns next came in to hit in place of Leibold and drove a single to left that scored Foster and Ruel, tying up the game. Moore was now pulled out of the game and Jim Sullivan came into pitch to Menosky. Mike got a base hit and Burns had to hold up at second, but later went to third on Harris' fly to right-field. He scored on a single by Pratt and the Red Sox were up again 6 to 5.

Jack Quinn took over to pitch in the seventh and with two outs, Tillie Walker slammed a pitch over the clock on top of the left-field wall, to once again tie up the game.

Quinn got the A's out in the 10th and in the Red Sox half of the inning, Foster lined a triple down the right-field line. That brought the A's infield in and Ruel blooped a single over Galloway's head into left field, to score the winning run.
