DEL PRATT

Del Pratt's timely hitting allows
the Sox to come back against the Yankees

June 23, 1922 ... Making a grand-come-from-behind fight, the Red Sox beat the New York Yankees, 5 to 4. Carl Mays, who had held his former teammates to only two base hits in the first five innings, was driven from the mound when the score was tied up in the seventh inning. Then Joe Bush got into the game and was held responsible for losing it.

Del Pratt made some timely hits with a double off each of the Yankee pitchers, and although he was charged with two errors, he played brilliantly in the field. He drove home two of the Red Sox runs and scored two more himself, including the winning run. His wrestling match at the plate with Yankee catcher Fred Hofmann allowed the Sox to score the deciding run. Hofmann had effectively blocked the plate and spite of a low throw, but let the ball get away from him as Pratt scored.

George Burns cracked out a couple of hits against Mays in the three times he faced him. Except in the third and fourth innings, when the Yankees scored all their runs, Herb Pennock pitched a fine game and seemed to be getting better each inning. He also got to Mays for a double, but Mays also doubled off him.

Nothing happened in the first two innings, although a great stop by Everett Scott may have saved made some trouble in the second. Scott started some trouble against Pennock in the third. He led off with a single to short center and scored on Hofmann's triple to right. After Mays was thrown out at first, Whitey Witt put Hofmann over with the second run, banging a single by Pratt.

Then in the fourth inning, Bob Meusel led with a double and went to third on a sacrifice. He scored on a single to left by Aaron Ward, who went down the second when Pratt fumbled a crazy hop hit to him by Scott. He then scored on Mays' double to left-center.

The Yankees held their four-run lead until the Red Sox half of the sixth inning. With two outs, Mays hit Mike Menosky with a pitched ball. George Burns singled to center and Pratt brought both runners home with a double to the bank in left-center. Joe Dugan put Pratt over the plate with a triple into the right-field corner, making the score 4 to 3.

The Red Sox worked the game into a tie in their half of the seventh-inning. With one out in Pinky Pittenger singled to right but was forced at second on Pennock's attempt at a sacrifice bunt. Elmer Smith poked a safe hit into right-field and Pennock went over to third-base. He then scored the tying run on Menosky's single.

Joe Bush then came into the game in relief of Mays. George Burns had already gotten to Mays for two base hits and manager Miller Huggins the not want to take the chance with him. Bush was not quite warmed up and was rather wild but after working Burns to a full count, he induced a fly ball to Witt, leaving the score tied at 4 to 4.

In the eighth-inning, Pratt led off with a double and went to third on Joe Dugan's bunt. Bush tried to make the play at third, but Pratt slid in safely. John Collins anxiously then jumped on one of Bush's pitches and popped out to Elmer Miller in short left, with Pratt staying at third.

Muddy Reul next sent an awkward bounding ball to Everett Scott, who was playing in. Scott backed off to get a better play on the ball and then made a poor throw to the plate, the ball bouncing past Hoffman and rolling to the stands as Pratt attempted to score. Hoffman and Pratt both got tangled up, but Pratt scored what would be the winning run, 5 to 4.
