BILL WAMBSGNASS |
Bill Wambsganss' walk-off
single in the
11th inning wins a battle for the Red Sox
April 25, 1925 ... The Red Sox refused to be denied in an
11 inning battle with the Philadelphia Athletics. The A's rallied in
the ninth inning to tie the game at 2-2. But in the 11th, Bill
Wambsgnass produced a single to deep right center, with Ike Boone
galloping home with the walk-off winning run.
It was a splendidly pitched battle throughout, with Jack Quinn
holding the visitors to eight hits, four of which came with two outs
in the ninth inning. The Sox got only six hits, two of which were
made in the 11th inning off Rube Walberg.
Down 1-0, the Sox went ahead in the second inning with two unearned
runs. Phil Todt and Wambsgnass led off with singles and A's catcher
Mickey Cochrane tried to pick Todt off second, but threw the ball
into centerfield, allowing both runners to move up. Then
secondbaseman Max Bishop allowed a ground ball from Val Picinich to
go right thru him and let both runners score.
In the ninth inning, three straight hits off Quinn brought home the
tying run for the Athletics. Then in the 11th, Walberg passed Boone
and purposely passed pinch hitter, Joe Harris, after Bobby Veach's
sacrifice bunt. Wamby finally sent the fans home happily after
striking a base hit between Al Simmons and Franck Welch. |
