Ira Flagstead comes thru and
Sy Rosenthal September 9, 1925 ... In the ninth inning, with the score tied and two outs, Ira Flagstead slammed a double past third base on which, with a tremendous burst of speed, Sy Rosenthal scored from first base and gave the Red Sox a 5-to-4 walk-off victory over the New York Yankees. Babe Ruth had his batting shoes on for the Yankees, with two doubles and two singles in four times to the plate, and driving in three of New York's four runs. He was, however, thrown out at the plate twice, when he took desperate chances in trying to score. Ted Wingfield pitched a fine game but was given rather poor support. But for one fielding error and one of poor judgment, no more than one run would have been scored against him. Roy Carlyle, Phil Todt and John Bischoff did some timely hitting, in addition to Flagstead's hit in the ninth inning off Hank Johnson. Johnson didn't help himself by issuing three free passes that helped develop two runs. The Yankees scored two runs in the first inning. Earle Combs received a walk and Jack Rothrock fumbled Bob Meusel's grounder, allowing Combs to get to third and Meusel to second. A double to right by Babe scored them both. In the fourth inning, Mark Koenig hit a high fly to right that Carlyle misjudged and let it get by him for a triple. A base hit by Combs brought him home. In the Sox half of the fourth, with one out, Carlyle doubled off the scoreboard and came home on a single by Todt. Then Billy Rogell and Doc Prothro drew passes to fill the bases. Bischoff next lined a double to left, scoring Todt and Rogell. Wingfield reached on an error by Koenig at deep short, also allowing Rothrock to come in, making the score 4-3 in favor of the Sox. In the seventh, Combs hit a fly ball to Carlyle in center, but he lost the ball in the sun, and Combs legged out a triple. Ruth counted him with a double to right, to tie up the score. There it remained until two were out in the Red Sox half of the ninth inning. Then Rosenthal was passed and Flagstead doubled past Meusel into the left field corner. Rosenthal got the go signal at third base and barely beat the throw, upsetting catcher, Benny Benbough and sliding in safely with the winning run. |
