The Red Sox come from behind
and beat the Yankees in the first game of a doubleheader
May 25, 1929
... In the first game of today's doubleheader the
Sox came from behind to beat New York, 10 to 8. Down by a run the Sox
scored three in the sixth inning. The big hit was Russ Scarritt's
triple to center with two men on, putting the Sox ahead. Bill Bayne
came in a held the Yankees hitless for the final three innings,
striking out both Gehrig and Ruth, the first two batters he faced in
the seventh.
All afternoon and into the twilight, the anemic Sox battled the
powerhouse Bronx Bombers. The Yankees started the first game with Lou
Gehrig blasting his 10th home run of the season after Earle Combs had
singled, in the first inning. In the second inning, Bill Dickey stung
another homer off Sox pitcher, Jack Russell.
But the Sox battled back and slapped out six hits in the third
inning. Bobby Reeves led off with a single to center off Fred
Heimach. Charlie Berry scored him with a triple to deep right field
and he was brought home two batters later, by Bill Narleski. Jack
Rothrock's base hit moved Nareleski over to third and Ira Flagstead
brought him home with a base hit to left. With Flaggy on first and
Rothrock on second, Elliot Bigelow advanced them ahead with a bunt.
Heimach walked Bill Regan intentionally to set up the force, but Phil
Todt slammed a double to left and scored them both, putting the Sox
up 6 to 3.
In the fourth and fifth innings, the Yanks made seven singles off
Russell and went ahead by two, 8 to 6. Myles Thomas was now pitching
for the Yanks and Bigelow slammed a double to start the fifth inning
and came home on Reeves' base hit, cutting the Yanks lead to one, 8
to 7. Then came the sixth inning and the Sox walked away with a
thrilling win.
There was not much doubt in the second game as the Sox committed four
errors and even letting Babe Ruth steal home, losing 8-3. The one Sox
highlight were the three doubles off the bat of Sox pitcher, Red
Ruffing. |
