September 7, 1929
... Down 3-0, the Red Sox
jumped on General Crowder. pitching for the St. Louis Browns, for
four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to walk away with a 4-3
victory. Crowder had held the Sox to just five hits thru eight
innings while his teammates got the lead off Red Ruffing.
With one out in the ninth, Johnnie Heving singled to left. Hal Rhyne
lofted a fly ball for out number two. Ruffing slammed a double to
center that scored Heving.
Crowder then lost his control and walked Bobby Reeves, setting up a
force play. Russ Scarritt's beat out a hit to deep short loaded the
bases. Then Jack Rothrock hit a line drive down the first base line
that took a bad hop by rightfielder Beauty McGowan that emptied the
bases for a great come-from-behind finish. |
