Ed Morris delivers a walk-off double for a win July 2, 1930 ... Big Ed Morris hammered a double off the left field wall in the last of the ninth, to send Otis Miller home with the walk-off run, enabling the Red Sox to beat the Cleveland Indians, 5-4. Clint Brown held the Red Sox hitters to one run until the eighth inning, while his Indian teammates piled up a three run advantage. But a rally in the eighth inning, climaxed by Phil Todt's two run homer, allowed the Sox to tie the game. In the fourth inning, down 4-0, Tom Oliver scored the Sox first run after he doubled and came home on a ground out to second by Russ Scarritt. Danny MacFayden had allowed Cleveland their four runs and was taken out for a pinch hitter in the eighth inning. Bill Sweeney started the rally with a single up the middle and moved up to second when centerfielder Earl Averill bobbled the ball. Oliver next drove a liner to center that scored Sweeney. That brought up Phil Todt, who took one of Brown's pitches into the right field bleachers tying the game at four apiece. Ed Morris took over for MacFayden and was able to pitch out of trouble in the ninth. Then in the bottom of the inning, Otis Miller drew a walk from Wes Ferrell, who had taken over for Brown. Miller was sacrificed over to second and Johnnie Heving was intentionally walked to set up a force. Morris was next and he lined a drive off the left field wall. Miller scampered around third and ended the game crossing the plate, for a 5 to 4 come-from-behind win. Tom Oliver (.324 BA) had a perfect day at the plate, going 4-for-4. |
