THE SOX HAVE TWO
20 GAME WINNERS ...
Billy Werber saves
Wes Ferrell his 19th win
August 11, 1935 ... Hard
hitting and sensational hustle by Billy Werber put the Sox ahead in
the second game of a doubleheader that gave Wes Ferrell his 19th
victory of the season, 5 to 4.
Woeful support had cost Lefty Grove the first game, 4 to 2. For most
of the second game, it looked like both Grove and Ferrell would both
lose to the Washington Nationals.
The Sox had jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Werber had
doubled to right and was brought home on Oscar Melillo's base hit.
Two doubles and a single put the Nats up by a run in the third
inning. Werber homered to lead off the fourth and the game was tied a
two apiece. Then in the sixth inning with runners on first and third,
Washington went ahead on Heinie Manush's single to right, 4 to 2.
Mel Almada, got three hits in the game, including a double in the
seventh inning, and was brought home by Joe Cronin, to make the score
4-3, heading into the eighth inning.
Werber led off with a walk and Melillo laid down a bunt and beat the
throw to first. Babe Dahlgren laid down another perfect bunt. With
Werber on third and Melillo on second, Wes Ferrell hit a grounder to
thirdbaseman Cecil Travis, who made a perfect throw home. Seeing
this, Werber plowed into catcher Cliff Bolton, knocking the ball out
of his glove. He was safe and the game was tied. Dusty Cooke followed
with a double off the left field scoreboard, scoring Melillo with the
go-ahead run.
Ferrell got the next three outs, sandwiched around a base hit, and
the game was his, 5 to 4. |
