Jimmie Foxx supplies a walk-off hit July 17, 1936 ... Jimmie Foxx busted a single over the head of Lyn Lary to send home Wes Ferrell and Heinie Manush in the ninth inning, thus giving the Sox a 2 to 1 walk-off win. The Sox therefore took four of the five games played against the Browns. Wes Ferrell added two doubles and a single to help his fine pitching work. A single, a stolen base and a base hit to right accounted for the Browns only run in the fourth inning. Ivy Andrews was knocking down Sox hitters throughout the game up until the final frame. Defensive fielding gems that stole extra base hits away, helped the Browns on numerous occasions But in the ninth, Doc Cramer led off with a single to center but tried to grab an extra base and got tossed out at second. Wes followed that with his second double off the wall. Manush grabbed a bat to pinch hit for Oscar Melillo and reached on a line drive at Lary that almost ripped off his glove, while Ferrell scooted over to third. Andrews filled the bases when he issued Joe Cronin a free pass. Billy Werber hit a pop fly to left, not deep enough to bring home Ferrell. That brought up double-xx, who ended the game with a liner to left. |
