“DIARY OF A WINNER”

BRONKO NAGURSKI

BOSTON'S NFL EAST CHAMPS
Jack Mander's field goal and touchdown
flop the Redskins

November 15, 1936 ... A wild battle between two of the peanut vendors fighting over a customer was better than the game seen today at Fenway Park.  The Bears gave the Redskins a merciless beating.  With guards Eddie Kahn and Jim Karcher on the sidelines, the Redskins interior line was no match for the powerful Bear defense.  Despite the loss, the locals remain in third place in the Eastern Division, less than a game behind.  The Bears outgained the Redskins, 401 yards to 116 (278 to 58 on the ground).

A 45 yard pass from Jack Masterson and a 21 yard field goal by Jack Manders, put the visitors on the board very early.  Manders PATs, 2 field goals, and a 36 yard touchdown run, netted him 14 points and gave him the lead in the league’s scoring stats.

The game started off with play in the Bears territory for most of the first period.  The Bears got their break when Beattie Feathers intercepted a pass at his own 35.  Bronko Nagurski took it down to the Boston 48 for a first down, but Riley Smith intercepted a pass to stop the drive.

After an exchange of punts, Masterson intercepted an Eddie Britt pass to give Chicago the ball at the Boston 45.  On the next play, Masterson found Bill Hewitt along the sideline who raced 30 yards for the first touchdown.

Boston received the kickoff and Battles was forced to punt.  The Bears started at their own 25 and Nagurski and Keith Molesworth ran for consecutive first downs.  Flave Tosi forced a Nagurski fumble and the locals took over at the Boston 28.  Chicago held and Riley Smith punted down to the Bear’s 25.

Ronzani and Molesworth ran a couple of plays off tackle, followed by Gene Ronzani aerial clicking with Bill Hewitt down to the Redskins’ 15, where Manders nudged over his first field goal.

The Redskins made no headway after taking the second half kick-off. Riley Smith punted into a stiff wind that knocked the ball down at the Boston 46.  At that point, Feather, Nagurski and Ronzani pounded out a touchdown in eight rushes.

At the start of the fourth quarter, Ed Smith was sent into the game for the Redskins and immediately connected with Wayne Milner for a first down.  But that was it.  After an exchange of punts, Smith was intercepted by Molesworth at the Bears 27 and zigzagged his way back to the Boston 32.  Three plays later, Jack Manders broke loose off left tackle and made a mad burst for the end zone.

Again, late in the period, Chicago marched the ball 64 yards to the Boston 23.  Three plays were smothered and the Bears had to settle for another Manders’ field goal.
