JIMMIE FOXX'S MVP SEASON
...
Jimmie Foxx's walk-off homer
lands
the Red Sox in first place
May 14, 1938
... Jimmie Foxx topped off a wild hitting
ballgame today with a walkoff home run into the centerfield bleachers
in the 11th inning. It gave the Red Sox a 10 to 9 win over the
Washington Nationals and boosted them in the first place in the
American League. The victory stretched the Red Sox winning streak to
seven straight and knocked Washington out of the league lead, by half
a game. Overcoming an early lead, which had been compiled by Al
Simmons, who clouted two home runs, a triple and a single, that drove in six
runs, the Red Sox tied the ballgame with a three run outburst in the
ninth-inning. They won in the second extra frame on Foxx's blast.
Six home runs were hit altogether. In addition to those by Foxx and Simmons,
Gene Desautels the Sox catcher, outfielder Joe Vosmik and Joe Cronin each parked
one into the stands.
Sox collected 16 hits for 31 total bases and Washington belted 15 hits for 25
bases. With that kind of assault on both sides, the game developed into a parade
of pictures from the bullpen, to the box, and then to the showers. Elon Hogsett,
who entered the game in the 10th inning was charged with the loss and rookie
pitcher Lee Rogers, called up from Little Rock, who pitched the 11th inning got
credit for the win.
Foxx had a double and a single as well as the home run and drove in three
runs. Cronin also batted three across with a home run and a single. Vosmik and
Ben Chapman each had three hits.
If not for Jimmie Foxx, the batting hero of the day would be Al Simmons. His
first home run came in the opening inning with nobody on. The second was a grand
slam in the fifth, that topped a five-run splurge by Washington. His triple in
the ninth-inning came with a man on second. |
