“DIARY OF A WINNER”

THE GREATEST EAGLE FOOTBALL TEAM September 21, 1940 ... Running up a 40-0 victory over mighty Centre College at Alumni Field, the Boston College football squad put up six touchdowns and were turned back two others by heroic efforts. The Kentuckians could not score, threatened only once and were generally behind the eight-ball all game. The Eagles revealed tremendous power, rolling over the outmanned Colonels. It all started in the opening period when Mike Holovak ended a 68 yard, 9 play advance with a yard belt into the end zone. Lou Montgomery then thrilled the crowd with a zig-zagging 38 yard scoring run in the second period. Lou went out to his left and cut back as the Colonel corner back was pushed out by Justin McGowan and cut back inside to make it 14-0. Four minutes later, after sophomore Mickey Connolly had run a punt back 27 yards to the four yard line. Butch Kissell busted through to make the score 21-0 at the half. Frank Maznicki, whose running was one of the features of the day, contributed the fourth score on a three yard fake over left tackle and a fast cut over left guard. He gained 68 yards on twelve rushes for the day. Mickey Connolly and Alex Lukachick made it five touchdowns on a four yard pass that Lukachick literally stole from two defenders. In the final period, after a 75 yard march, Connolly added the final score of the day with a 18 yard jaunt on the end of a lateral from Butch Kissell.
No one Eagle could grab the spotlight with a different player running with the football on each touchdown. Gene Goodreault picked up right where he left off last year by playing his usual great defensive game. He was the fifth man in the Centre College backfield because he was constantly able to rush the passer all afternoon. Charlie O'Rourke played about 10 minutes, made one 30-yard run, tossed a couple of unsuccessful passes and punted twice. |
