An Eagle powerhouse crushes Idaho, 60-0 October 19, 1940 ... Coming within one point of their all-time winning margin, Coach Frank Leahy's Eagles cut down Idaho by a devastating score of 60-0. In handling Idaho their worst defeat in the school's history, the Eagles could do wrong. They romped through a bewildered and impotent defense at will, employing only simple plays. Charlie O'Rourke did not throw a single pass for the first time in his career. Although the first team only played for the first seven minutes of each half. Idaho kept eleven men on the field but the Eagles apparently were not aware that they were around.
In the 14 minutes they played, the first team rang up four touchdowns without resorting to a single forward pass. The Eagles ran up a 27-0 lead in the first period on 12 and 9 yard runs by Frank Maznicki, a 17 yard pass from Bob Jauron to Lou Montgomery, and a 21 yard sweep Montgomery. A 23 yard pass from Mickey Connolly to Ted Williams, and a magnificent 70 yard dash by Mike Holovak, made it 40-0 at the half. A 37 yard run by Charlie O'Rourke on a botched razzle dazzle play, a four yard run by Holovak, and a 50 yard sprint by Jauron brought the third period count to 60-0. At this point the Eagles almost let Idaho score, but they still couldn't a thing against the third and fourth string Eagles. |
