THE GREATEST EAGLE FOOTBALL TEAM

October 27, 1940 ...
Boston College is at the top of the ratings as a powerhouse having scored 215 points to 27 for their opponents thru five games.  Frank Maznicki is the East's fifth leading scorer with 56 points.

October 28, 1940 ... Teddy Williams gathered the high praise at the end of today's two hour scrimmage.  He was instrumental in four touchdowns against the freshmen, passing for two and running a total of 70 yards in the other two.  Tackles Joe Manzo and Rocco Canale were excused from practice with injuries, but both are expected to be ready for Saturday's game.

October 29, 1940 ... The Eagles ran through a light workout with the passing of Charlie O'Rourke and Mickey Connolly on display against the freshmen defense.  Both players have not passed much in the last two games and need to stay sharp, as Coach Leahy has some passing plays planned for Manhattan.  O'Rourke completed four of five passes, one of which Henry Woronicz snagged deep downfield with his fingertips. Connolly concentrated on his short passes.

October 30, 1940 ... The public sale of tickets for the Georgetown game started with availability at the athletic office and at Filene's Men's Store.  Thousands of tickets are available for area high school boys and girls for this Saturday's Manhattan game.  Coach Leahy held a double scrimmage with O'Rourke and Connolly seeing action on one offensive team, and Frank Maznicki and Teddy Williams running the plays in the other offensive scrimmage.

October 31, 1940 ... The Eagles ran through a two hour drill highlighted by work with the punting team.  O'Rourke, Holovak and Kissell did the kicking and blockers were the freshmen who will play the Boston University freshmen.  The Eaglets freshmen game will have the varsity in attendance to cheer them on.  The Eagles are ranked 10th in the national rankings.  The Eagles are in great physical shape with no injuries.

MIKE HOLOVAK MUDS IT IN

Manhattan gets smothered
in the B.C. mud, 25-0

November 2, 1940 ... A driving rain and ankle-deep mud could not stop Boston College in it's bid for post-season recognition as the Eagles, sparked by Mike Holovak's 48 rushing yards, stormed by Manhattan College.  Under ordinary conditions, four touchdowns would not raise an eyebrow, but  on a dry field the score would have been even higher. Only 10-yards in from each sideline was playable.  The rest of the field was a swamp.

After attempting one pass on the first play of the game, the Eagles decided to bang their way through the Manhattan defense on the ground, sustaining marches of 43, 73, 75 and 55 yards.  They used just eight different plays, good for 13 first downs with a total of 299 yards.  Mike Holovak opened the first period by scoring a touchdown after Mickey Connolly had put the ball on the 8-yard line.  In the second period, the Eagles rolled 37 yards in four plays to allow Lou Montgomery to take the ball in.  Behing the blocking of Frank Maznicki and Charlie O'Rourke, Mike Holovak scored again.  The last touchdown came in the fourth period when Don Currivan recovered a punt that had been blocked by Steve Levanitas.
