The Sox score 24 runs and
set a
MLB record for runs in a game
September 27, 1940
... With a plethora of hits of all
descriptions, the Red Sox defeated Washington at Fenway Park in the
final game of their series by a score of 24 to 4, making a new record
for the total number of runs scored in a game. The Cincinnati Reds
scored 23 in a game against Brooklyn last June which was the MLB
record. Joe Cronin got his 24th home run of the season and Bobby
Doerr his 22nd along with two doubles. Tony Lupien knocked out a triple, Dom
DiMaggio a double and three singles, Doc Cramer three singles and Fritz
Ostermueller with two against three different Washington pitchers.
Ostermueller pitched a complete game for the Red Sox and Washington put over
two runs against him in the first inning on two singles and a double. They got
the other two runs in the seventh on four singles, but by that time the Red Sox
had the game sewn up and Ostermueller was taking it easy.
The Red Sox scored a run in the first inning when DiMaggio drew a base on
balls, went to third on Cramer's single and scored when Ted Williams hit into a
doubleplay. They got five in the third on singles by Ostermueller, DiMaggio,
Cramer, Foxx and Cronin's home run with one man on.
Ten runs were scored in the fourth inning on five hits, an error and three
base on balls. Another run was added in the fifth when Doerr connected for his
home run and seven more were added in the eighth on a double by Charlie Gelbert,
singles by Gene Desautels and Ostermueller, a double by DiMaggio, a walk to Stan
Spence, a triple by Lupien and and a double by Doerr. |
