Johnny Peacock's double and
Dom DiMaggio's
fly ball beats the Yankees in the 10th inning
August
18, 1942 ... Before a gathering of 11,000
fans, including far more than the usual sprinkling of service men in
uniforms, the Red Sox staged a 10th inning finish to beat the New
York Yankees, 8 to 7.
The Yankees broke away to a four-run lead at the expense of Dick Newsome,
mainly due to Joe Gordon's home run. The Red Sox came back with two runs as
Bobby Doerr belted the ball over the left-field wall with Johnny Pesky on base
in the Sox half of the first.
Down 4 to 2 in the fifth inning, Pesky homered with Jim Tabor and Johnny
Peacock on base, to put the Red Sox ahead by a run, 5 to 4. The Yanks tied the
game and in the seventh with DiMaggio on first, Pesky bunted him to third. Ted
scored him with a base hit and Bobby Doerr scored Pesky with another to put the
Sox ahead 7-5.
Then came the ninth-inning when a clean single by Charlie Keller was good for
two runs and tied the game at seven apiece, sending things into overtime. The
Red Sox took little time to win the game in the 10th. The winning rally started
when Johnny Peacock doubled off the right-field wall. He earlier had a pair of
singles, one of which was an important factor when the Sox got three runs in the
fifth inning.
Pete Fox went in to run for Peacock and pitcher Mace Brown, laid down a
beautiful bunt to send him the third. Then the game was over quickly, when Dom
DiMaggio hit a fly ball far into the right-field corner where Tommy Henrich made
a wonderful one-handed catch, as Fox easily tagged up and scored the
game-winner. Most other outfielders just would've just kissed the ball goodbye
and headed straight for the showers. |
