The Red Sox
get a win in 10 innings
May 26, 1948 ... The
Red Sox got some luck today and with the help of a costly Browns
error, they came up with two runs in the 10th inning to beat St.
Louis by a 5 to 3 score, and give Joe Dobson his fourth win of the
year. Vern Stephens batted in three of the five runs and the victory
was the Sox second one on the road trip, giving them a split in the
two-game series here in St. Louis.
An error by Brown's catcher Les Moss allowed Sam Mele to score the winning
run in the 10th inning. Mele open the 10th inning with a double to the right
centerfield wall and then Moss came up with a two base error on Dom DiMaggio's
sacrifice, that allowed Mele to score. Ned Garver pitched a good game for the
Browns, going out for a pinch-hitter when St. Louis tied the score in the
eighth-inning.
Sam Dente helped the Red Sox to a run in the fourth inning, when he booted
DiMaggio's grounder. Bobby Doerr sent DiMaggio over to third with a hit-and-run
single and then Vern Stephens banged clean hit to left for the game's first run.
Dobson was rolling along fine style, allowing but three hits in six innings,
when he ran into some trouble in the seventh. Gerry Priddy opened up the inning
with a single to right and Al Zarilla sacrificed him to second. Paul Lehner
knocked a single to center and when Dom lost the ball, he took second. Whitey
Platt then walked and after Les Moss flew out, Dente singled to right to send
the Browns ahead 2 to 1.
The Red Sox went ahead in the eighth when the Browns chose to lay back for a
doubleplay and lost out in the decision. Ted Williams opened with a single to
right and was followed by Stan Spence who did likewise, sending Ted over to
third-base. Mele was sent in to run for Spence and DiMaggio walked. Bobby Doerr
forced him out at second as Williams crossed the plate. Vern Stephens then hit
one down to Dente and the Browns infield, playing fairly shallow, went for the
double-play, losing out as Stephens beat Priddy's relay to first. On the play
Mele scored, putting the Red Sox up 3 to 2.
In the eighth-inning Ray Coleman pinch hit for Garver and drilled a single to
left, going to second on a sacrifice, and to third on an infield out. He scored
the tying run on a Dobson wild pitch. Dobson had good stuff, in fact it was too
good. His curveball eluded Birdie Tebbetts for the tying Browns' score. It was
the second such wild pitch in two successive innings. |
