BOSTON RED SOX ...
THE
CURSE OF THE BAMBINO, PART 3
A
SUBWAY SERIES DISAPPEARS ...
June 7, 1948 ... The
Red Sox will be facing the Cleveland Indians, who they trail by 9 1/2
games. The Indians have won four successive games since losing their
first two games in Washington and then proceeded to sweep into the
league lead by beating the Athletics three times in a row. The Sox
seem to have shaken themselves out of the doldrums while they were on their
recent western trip, by beating the Browns three games in a row and taking a
doubleheader from the Tigers.
Ted Williams hit at a .500 clip over the week to bolster his grip on the
American League batting leadership with a .391 average. His 17 point climb gave
him a 29 point margin over runner-up Lou Boudreau of the Indians. Williams went
11 for 23 during the week in a resurgence of power which gave him the league
batting crown last season and in 1942 and 1941. He has 63 hits, more than Boudreau, who is second with 54.
