ELLIS KINDER & DOM DiMAGGIO

THE CURSE OF THE BAMBINO, PART 4
FALLING SHORT AT THE END AGAIN
...
Ellis Kinder strikes out 14 Brownies

August 3, 1949 ... Ellis Kinder struck out a remarkable total of 14 batters, while the Red Sox beat the Browns, 9 to 3. Birdie Tebbetts, his catcher, said that Kinder reminded him of the game in which Bob Feller had struck out 18 of his teammates in 1938, when he was with the Tigers.

Kinder's 14 strikeouts was one short of the Red Sox record held by Joe Wood, who struck out 15 of the St. Louis Browns in 1911. Kinder's victory was his 12th against five losses. He gave out seven hits and walked only three batters. It helped the Red Sox win their fourth straight, and eighth of ten games since opening their homestand.

Bobby Doerr slammed his 13th home run and got two singles for 4 RBIs. Johnny Pesky and Vern Stephens each had three hits. Dom DiMaggio hit safely two times with a double and a single, to extend his consecutive game hitting streak to 30 straight.

Kinder had five called strikes outs and got nine swinging. Every starter of the Browns went down swinging except one. His previous game high for strikeouts this year was nine on May 18th against the White Sox.

Joe Ostrowski pitched five scoreless innings for the Browns, before getting slapped around in a four-run sixth inning, highlighted by Doerr's three run homer. He stayed with Kinder pitch for pitch until DiMaggio opened up the sixth inning with a double. Pesky beat out his sacrifice bunt and moved up a base on a steal. After Williams popped out, Vern Stephens dropped a Texas Leaguer near the foul line in right, to score DiMaggio. Doerr's home run scored Pesky and Stephens.

After Kinder gave the Browns a run in the seventh, on a walk and two singles, the Red Sox exploded for five runs in their half of the inning. DiMaggio and Pesky led off with base hits and both stole a base to put themselves on second and third, both scoring on Williams line drive single to right. Ralph Weingarner who was the St. Louis pitcher walked Stephens and Doerr lined a single to left that scored Williams. Al Papai came in and was greeted by Billie Goodman with a double off the left-field wall that scored Stephens. Tommy O'Brien lifted a fly ball to center that scored Doerr, to make the score 9 to 1.

Roy Sievers hit a home run in the eighth, with Whitey Platt aboard, to account for the last two runs by the Browns.
