THE BEST OFFENSIVE SEASON June 8, 1950 ... Baseball records were shot to bits by Red Sox hitters as they slashed four St. Louis pitchers for 28 hits in a humiliating, 29-4 victory over the Browns. As a small crowd of 5105 fans yelled for more, the crazed Sox batters used Fenway Park as a private hitting ground. They broke major league records for runs scored in a game with 29, breaking the record of 28 by the 1929 St. Louis Cardinals. The had 60 total bases, breaking the record of 55 held by the Cincinnati Reds. They scored 49 runs in two games breaking the record of 40 held by the Red Sox. 51 hits in two games broke the record that was shared by the Red Sox and the Athletics. Al Zarilla's four doubles equaled a record held by several players. The Sox came within one home run of the single game record, with eight. Bobby Doerr hit three homers, while Ted Williams and Walt Dropo each knocked out two. Chuck Stobbs won his fourth game although he gave up four consecutive base on balls. In the second inning, a dozen Sox batters came to the plate, knocking out six hits and collected three walks, scoring eight runs. Eleven Sox batters came up in both the third and fourth innings. Zarilla started the second with a double to right. Browns' starter, Cliff Fannin, walked Doerr. Matt Batts drove in Zarilla while Doerr scurried to third. A walk to Stobbs loaded the bases. Vollmer's flyball brought in Doerr and Williams' first homer of the day brought in Batts and Stobbs ahead of him. After Stephens drew a free pass, Dropo blasted his first homer of the game. Zarilla came up again and lined a double to center. Doerr brought him in with a base hit for the eighth run of the inning. In the third inning Cuddles Marshall took over for St. Louis and opened by walking Stobbs. He then walked Vollmer and Williams to load the bases. Stephens lined a double off the wall that scored Pesky and Stobbs. Dropo's double scored Stephens and Williams. Zarilla's double put Dropo on third and Doerr's flyball scored him with the fifth and final run of the inning. Then in the fourth inning, Pesky led off with a base hit. Stephens tripled to the triangle in center, scoring Pesky. He scored on Dropo's base hit to left. Doerr homered, scoring Dropo, and ended the day for Marshall. Sid Schacht came into the game to face Batts. He lined a fly ball to right, that was mishandled by Dick Kokos, Batts get to second base. Schacht walked Stobbs and Vollmer's double off the wall scored Batts and Pesky's double to right scored Vollmer and Stobbs. The Sox were up 20-3. In the fifth inning Schacht walked Dropo and Zarilla doubled to right. Doerr's sac fly scored Dropo and Zarilla crossed the plate on Batts' base hit for two more runs. Doerr homered for the second time in the seventh inning, with Zarilla on base. The Sox hit three homers in the 8th inning, including Williams' second of the day as well as Dropo's second, and Doerr slammed his third homer of the game. Doerr drove in eight runs and Dropo sent home seven. Williams accounted for five. Johnny Pesky had five hits in seven times up. Zarilla was five for seven and Doerr was four for six. Dropo was also four for six and Stephens was three for six. |
