WALT DROPO |
THE BEST OFFENSIVE SEASON IN SOX HISTORY
...
The Sox come back after being down by 7 runs
August 27, 1950 ... The
Cleveland Indians blew a 7 to 0 lead and were beaten by the Red Sox
11 to 9. Clyde Vollmer's pinch hit grandslam homer climaxed a six-run
seventh inning when three consecutive errors by the Indians filled
the bases for Vollmer with two outs.
The Indians had scored seven runs in the third inning. Twelve men
came to bat and collected three walks and five hits, one a grand slam
homer by Ray Boone.
The Sox came back with five runs in their half of the inning. Bob
Feller walked two batters and was slapped with three hits, including
Walt Dropo's 29th homer of the year with two men on base.
Then in the seventh, down 9 to 5, Johnny Pesky lined out to Larry
Doby, but Billy Goodman singled off the left field wall. Lou Stringer
then came off the bench and doubled down the left field line.
Dropo's grounder brought in Goodman. Indians thirdbaseman Al Rosen
then booted a grounder from Bobby Doerr and Boone booted balls hit by
Al Zarilla and Buddy Rosar, before Vollmer launched his grandslam.
Joe Dobson came in and pitched two scoreless innings. Vollmer's smash
was the first of his career. |
