WITHOUT LOSING A STEP ...
George Kell and Sammy White
lead the Sox to a doubleheader sweep
May 22, 1953 ... The
Red Sox swept a tight doubleheader from the Athletics by identical
scores of 3 to 2, winning both games with strong finishes. They
grabbed the opener against Alex Kellner, with two runs in the eight
inning and won the nightcap on Sammy White's 12th inning walk-off
double.
Mel Parnell chalked up his sixth victory in the first game, but
needed an assist from Ellis Kinder. Hersh Freeman pitched the last
three innings of the second game to get that win. George Kell and
Hoot Evers blasted home runs for the Sox and Joe DeMaestri did
likewise for the A's. Kell brought in two of the three runs in the
opener and his eighth inning single scored Jimmy Piersall with the
game winner.
In the second game, the Sox tied it up at 2-2 in the ninth inning.
Then in the 12th inning, with Carl Scheib, the fourth A's pitcher on
the mound, Evers opened with a walk. After Dick Gernert flied out and
Kell drew another walk, Sammy White ended it with a slashing double
to left center, as Evers flashed across the plate with the winning
run.
The Sox got off to a quick start in the opener when Kell pumped
his third homer into the left field screen off Kellner in the first
inning. Philly tied it up in the sixth thanks to a meltdown by the
Sox infield. DeMaestri singled and was forced by Pete Suder.
Eddie Robinson grounded to Kell who tried to run down Suder, but
missed him. He then botched a grounder from Gus Zernial and Suder was
able to score the tying run.
The A's then went ahead in the eighth when Zernial, Cass Michaels and
Eddie McGhee all singled. With the Sox now trailing 2-1 going into
the eighth and with two outs, Tom Umphlett doubled and Piersall drove
him in, with the tying run, on a triple. Kell then scored Piersall
with what would be the game winner.
Evers hit his second homer of the year in the first inning of the
second game off A's starter, Marion Fricano. DeMaestri tied it up
with a homer in the third inning. Again the A's scored in the eighth
inning to go out front, 2-1.
With Bob Newsom pitching the Sox tied the game in the ninth inning.
He hit Milt Bolling with a pitch and walked pinch-hitter, Gene
Stephens. Umphlett's single up the middle, scored Bolling with the
tying run. Freeman pitched scoreless ball over the next three
innings, before White's double ended the evening. |
