The Red Sox beat the A's
twice on the back
of a great relief job by Murray Wall
August 24, 1958
... Jackie Jensen singled home the winning run
in the bottom of the 11th inning to back up the brilliant relief job
by Murray Wall. It gave the Red Sox a sweep of the doubleheader with
the Kansas City Athletics. The Sox romped to a 14-3 win in the first
game.
Ray Herbert held the Red Sox to only four hits in the second game,
until the final extra inning. Then Gene Stephens bashed a single off
Chico Carrasquel's glove and Frank Malzone lined a single to center.
Jensen drove Stephens home for his 110th RBI of the season, with a
sharp line drive to right field.
It gave a walk-off win to Wall, who took over for Ted Bowsfield, the
Sox starter. Wall allowed only one runner to reach base in 7 2/3
innings of sharp relief. That runner was Harry Chiti who cleanly
singled in the seventh inning. Wall then retired the last 14 batters
to pick up his seventh win.
The rookie left-hander, Bowsfield was sailing along until he hit a
wild streak in the fourth inning. After passing Hector Lopez and
giving up a double to Bob Cerv, he issued three more straight passes
to force in two Kansas City runs that put them ahead 2-1. Wall came
in and forced Joe DeMaestri to hit into a doubleplay and end the
inning.
The Sox had grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Ray Herbert
walked Sammy White who went to second, being safe on a fielder's
choice grounder hit by Bowsfield. Bowsfield then made it to third
safely on another grounder hit by Don Buddin, that bounced off the
shins of Carrasquel. Pete Runnels' single to left put the Sox ahead 1
to 0.
The Sox later tied the game at 2-2 on Malzone's infield hit and Jimmy
Piersall's two-bagger in their half of the fourth inning. Wall shut
down the A's after that. It was a great duel with Herbert, who had a
three-hitter going for nine innings, until the 11th.
The Red Sox started the first game fast and finished it even faster,
driving Ned Garver to the showers with a six-run first inning. Buddin
and Runnels were both walked and Williams drove home Buddin with a
base hit. Jensen's flyball scored Runnels. A walk to Gernert and
another hit by Piersall ended Herbert's day quickly. Ned Garver came
in and, with the bases loaded, gave up a two-run single to Pete
Daley. Sox pitcher, Frank Sullivan, put across another run with a
base hit and now Bud Davis came in to pitch for the A's. He gave up a
run-scoring double to Buddin before getting Runnels on an
inning-ending fly ball.
The Sox put four more runs on the board in both the seventh and eight
innings, highlighted by Dick Gernert's homer into the nets.. Buddin
and Daley, led the 16-hit Boston attack with three hits each, both
driving in three runs. Ted Williams singled twice in the game,
scoring his 1700th career run. |
