The Sox nip the Tigers in the 10th inning
May 20, 1961
... The Red Sox, in one of their most glittering
defensive performances, beat the Tigers 4 to 3 in the 10th inning.
Jackie Jensen's run-scoring single with two outs, provided the
walk-off win.
The Sox infield of Frank Malzone, Don Buddin, Chuck Schilling and
Pete Runnels, pulled off five doubleplays in six innings. For most of
the game the fans watched a pitchers' duel between Billy Muffett and
Don Mossi.
The game was scoreless until the sixth inning when the Sox broke
first. Muffett walked, Schilling reached on an error and then a
double by Carroll Hardy, a single by Carl Yastrzemski and a sacrifice
fly by Jensen accounted for three runs.
Then in the eight inning, with two men on, Jake Wood's line drive hit
the right field foul pole and the score was tied.
Dave Hillman replaced Muffett and held the Tigers scoreless for the
next two innings.
In the bottom of the tenth, Rip Repulski started with a pounded ball
down toward first, that froze pitcher Hank Aguirre and firstbaseman
Norm Cash. Wood came racing over from second base but there was not
much he could do. Tom Brewer came in as a pinch runner and Chuck
Schilling attempted to sacrifice him over with a bunt. Aguirre, after
pouncing on the ball, overthrew second base but Chuck Cottier leapt
and kept it from going into the outfield. Aguirre got the next two
batters out before facing Jensen.
With the count 1 and 2, Jensen lashed a liner into left field. Rocky
Colavito charged the ball, taking it on one hop and fired toward home
as Brewer rounded third. The ball bounced into the infield dirt a
dozen feet to the first base side and Brewer scored the winning run
standing up.
