A NEW ERA BEGINS WITH YAZ
...
Yaz walks-off the Sox with a 10th inning homer
September 15, 1961
... Carl Yastrzemski started off the 10th inning by
bombing a 400 ft homer into the Sox bullpen and giving Gene Conley
and the Red Sox a 3 to 2 win over the Orioles.
Conley struck out 10 of the Orioles and limited them to four walks
and five hits, permitting only three baserunners to advance beyond
first base. And behind him, the Sox infielders clicked off three
doubleplays.
Jackie Brandt started the scoring with a homer off Conley into the
nets in the first inning. Then Gary Geiger lined a homer into the
right field grandstand in the Sox' first inning.
Conley didn't give up another hit until the fifth inning, when Jerry
Adair doubled with one out. With two away, Brooks Robinson hit a fly
to right center. Gary Geiger came racing after it but dropped the
ball, sending Adair home. Robinson was given a triple by the scorer.
In the Sox half of the inning, Conley hit a grounder that went under
Ron Hansen's glove. Chuck Schilling moved him over with a bunt,
Geiger walked, and Frank Malzone lined a single to center that scored
Conley with the tying run, 2 to 2.
In spite of three errors by Hansen, the Sox couldn't capitalize, and
the game moved into extra innings. In the home half of the 10th
inning, Yaz jumped on a 2-2 pitch and hit a liner into the Sox
bullpen sending the 10, 604 fans home happily. |
