“DIARY OF A WINNER”

BABE PARILLI

THE PATRIOTS' FIRST TITLE
The Patriots' defense keys
an opening day victory

September 8, 1963 ... The widely criticized Patriots defense, considered a weakness of the team, led Boston to its first victory of the season at Boston College’s Alumni Stadium.  Coming up with five timely interceptions, four of which were turned into scores, the defensive unit broke up a tight game, as the Patriots, with 21 points in the last quarter, beat the New York Jets, 38 to 14.  Dick Felt and Nick Buoniconti intercepted Jet’s quarterback Dick Wood in the third period to open up a 14-14 tie game. Buoniconti interception resulted in Gino Cappelletti’s 32 yard field goal.  The three other interceptions resulted in touchdowns.

Before the game was two minutes old, the Jets had seven points on the board.  A low pass from center allowed the Jets to swamp Patriots punter Tommy Yewcic.  Larry Grantham picked up the blocked punt and ran in in from the 30 yard line.  Larry Garron returned the kickoff down to the 33.  Babe Parilli threw to Gino Cappelletti at the Boston 42, then rolled out on the next play and hit Larry Garron on the Jets’ four yard line. Jim Crawford then followed guard Billy Neighbors into the end zone.  In the second quarter started at their five and worked the ball deep into Jets’ territory, where Cappelletti made a diving catch of a Parilli pass.  Billy Lott carried it in for the next score.  The Jets zoomed back and went 80 yards in seven plays, with the payoff being a four yard toss from Wood to Bake Turner, who victimized Pats’ corners Ross O’Hanley and Bob Suci in the corner of the end zone.  In the second half, Dick Felt intercepted Wood on the Boston 21.

When the Jets got the ball again, Buoniconti intercepted on the Jets 15 and moved it out to the 38.  Parilli teamed up with Tony Romeo and Cappelletti ended the drive with a field goal, giving the Patriots the lead.  In the fourth quarter Tommy Stephens intercepted on the New York 31 and brought it down to the 11, where Parilli rolled out and scampered into the end zone.  On the next set of downs, Buoniconti and Jack Rudolph rushed Jets punter Curley Johnson, forcing a short kick.  From the 33, Parilli then hit Art Graham for the next score.  Stephens the intercepted on the next series at the New York 45, allowing the Patriots to put another score on the board.  Babe Parilli had a great day, completing 19 of 35 passes for 268 yards.  Cappelletti caught five for 68 yards; Romeo 6 for 40 yds; Graham two for 48 yds and Colclough one for 18 yds.
