The
Red Sox beat the Braves in the "Jimmy Fund" game
June 3, 1963
... The night started out with the Fenway faithful
cheering for Warren Spahn and jeering for the Red Sox. The Braves had
beat the Sox in all three previous "Jimmy Fund" exhibition games, but
tonight the Sox broke the spell by beating them 5 to 2.
Dave Morehead looked as impressive as he had in his first starts this
year. For five innings he allowed only two hits, one to Hank Aaron
and the other to his brother Tommie Aaron. Hank hit a double off the
wall in left-centerfield in the fourth inning, and Tommie, rapped a
single to left the next inning.
But in the bottom of the fifth inning, Eddie Bressoud smashed a homer
into the left field net off Frank Funk, who then hit Morehead with a
pitch on his hand.
The Braves came back with their rookie pitcher, Dan Schneider in the
seventh inning, down 1-0. He was hit for four singles by Roman
Mejias, Dick Williams, Lou Clinton and Bob Tillman, and gave out
three walks, for four runs.
So then the Braves, now down 5-0, started their half of the eighth
with a single to left by Don Dillard off Arnold Early, who had
replaced Morehead. Bubba Morton lined to Felix Mantilla at short, who
made a nice grab and was able to double up Dillard at first. Denis
Menke next hit a high pop that Gary Geiger got messed up on, while
trying to track down, falling into short right field for a double.
Lee Maye drew a walk and Bob Uecker lined a double over Roman Mejias'
head, scoring the two runners. But Early struck out the next two
batters and got out of trouble.
In the ninth inning, behind 5 to 2, Norm Larker and Morton got base
hits off Chet Nichols the third Sox pitcher. But Mack Jones struck
out for the third time in the game and Tommie Aaron hit into a
doubleplay to end it. |
