Eddie Bressoud hits two homers to beat Cleve June 26, 1963 ... The Red Sox beat the Indians, 6 to 5, when Eddie Bressoud hit his second home run of the game off Pedro Ramos in the ninth inning. Ramos was called out of the bullpen in the eighth inning after Russ Nixon had smashed a three-run homer in the seventh off Mudcat Grant, that put the Sox ahead, 4-3. When Ramos came in he immediately gave up a homer to Chuck Schilling that gave the Sox a two run lead. Ramos didn't last any longer when Joe Adcock pinch-hit for him in the ninth inning and smashed a two-run homer into the Indians' bullpen that tied the game at five apiece. In the ninth, after striking out Lou Clinton, Ramos gave Bressoud a present and Eddie popped it off one of the left field light towers for the walk-off win. The last time Bressoud had hit two homers in a game was on April 19th against the Tigers. Grant had helped himself with a base hit off Dave Morehead in the third inning, but was forced at second by Tito Francona. Singles by Willie Kirkland and Max Alvis scored him with a run in the third inning to give the Indians a 1-0 lead. From that point Grant had pitched a good game until Nixon homered off him in the seventh inning. Bressoud hit a homer off Grant in the third inning to tie the game, but after that he handled the Sox efficiently. In the sixth inning Mike de la Hoz doubled to left center and Jerry Kindall sacrificed him to third. Then Grant singled again, with a line drive to center to put his team up 2-1. Al Luplow next drew a walk and while Francona was swinging at a second strike, Grant and Luplow pulled off a double steal. Grant came in on Francona's fly to center and the Indians were ahead by two runs. Frank Malzone's infield single in the seventh inning was followed by a strike out by Dick Stuart and a fly ball out by Clinton. Bressoud's high bouncer went over third base and rolled all the way to the wall, allowing Malzone to scamper to third. Then came Nixon who took an 0-2 pitch into the bullpen, giving the Sox a 4-3 lead. |
