Four runs in the 9th inning gives the Sox a win May 19, 1964 ... The Sox were behind 3-0 with two outs in the ninth inning. Bo Belinsky was having his way with the Red Sox batters, making them hit the ball on the ground all game. Dick Stuart came to the plate and the fans hooted at him. Belinsky walked him on four pitches and then got two strikes on Tony Conigliaro, before he whacked a double off the left field wall. Up was Bob Tillman, and after throwing one ball, Belinsky was taken out in favor of Barry Latman, who walked Tillman. The bases were loaded and Latman nicked Roman Mejias bringing home Stuart with a run. Johnny Pesky picked Dalton Jones to pinch hit for Bob Heffner, the Sox pitcher. After one pitch, Latman was taken out and in came Don Lee. His first pitch was too high, but the second pitch was where Jones liked it, and he lined it over second base, bringing in two runs. But Mejias kept going from first and centerfielder, Dick Simpson, in his hurry to get to the ball, bobbled it and in came Mejias with the winning run, 4 to 3, Red Sox. Bill Monbouquette was saved from his sixth loss after giving up a couple of homers. The Angels got their third run on three singles in the sixth inning. |
