Tony
Horton's double in the 10th beats the O's
August 19,
1964 ... Tony Horton's double to left in the
last of the 10th inning, scored Carl Yastrzemski all the way around
from first base, to give the Red Sox a 4 to 3 walk-off win over the
first place Baltimore Orioles.
The game had developed into a pitching duel between Dick Radatz and
Harvey Haddix when Yaz opened the inning with a single to right.
Horton tried unsuccessfully to sacrifice him over and then blasted a
line drive down the third base line. The ball went into the left
field corner as Boog Powell, playing left field, went after it. Yaz
raced around the bases and was able to score the game-winning run
well ahead of Powell's throw to the plate.
Earl Wilson started for the Sox and held Baltimore to two hits and a
walk in 6 2/3 innings of work. Both Orioles' hits were home runs
however. One was by Powell in the fourth inning and the other came
from Johnny Orsino in the sixth.
Wally Bunker started for Baltimore and Dalton Jones hit safely off
him in all three plate appearances, helping to put the Sox ahead.
After Powell put the O's up 1-0, Jones led off the fourth with a drag
bunt base hit. Bunker walked Felix Mantilla and Yaz loaded the bases
with a single to left. Horton's ground out to short scored Jones with
the tying run.
Jones put the Sox up 2-1 in the fifth inning. Ed Bressoud started
with a double off the wall. Bob Tillman drew a walk and Jones laced a
double down the right field line to score Bressoud. Mantilla was then
intentionally walked and Yaz hit into the force play at second, but
it scored Tillman with the go-ahead run, 3 to 1.
Orsino's homer in the next inning cut the Sox lead to one run. Then
in the 8th inning, with Dick Radatz on the mound, Orsino scored Jerry
Adair with a sac fly, who had led the inning off with a triple, to
tie the game was at three apiece.
In the ninth the Orioles got to Radatz by loading the bases, but
Radatz struck-out Adair and got Orsino to pop up. Radatz got the win
after three straight losses. |
