Jim Gosger's
16th inning homer beats the Yanks
June 4, 1966
... Jim Gosger blasted a three run homer in the 16th
inning off the Yankees relief pitcher Dooley Womack, at 11:59 in
Boston. Had it come one minute later, the Massachusetts "Blue Laws"
would have kicked in and the game would have had to be continued the
next day.
It was quite a game and a pitcher's duel by each team's bullpen. In
the last 10 innings only one hit had been surrendered. That was a
bloop hit by Elston Howard in the 11th inning.
Jose Santiago started for the Red Sox and pitched into the seventh
inning. The Sox were ahead, 3 to 2, and the Yankees had men on first
and third with nobody out. Richardson managed to get the tying run in
with a fly ball. In came Don McMahon to face Mickey Mantle and Roger
Maris. McMahon struck out Mantle and got Maris on an easy line drive
to George Scott at first base.
Next came Dan Osinski, Lee Stange, Jerry Stephenson, Dick Stigman and
finally Ken Sanders. Sanders got the win.
The Yankees scored first on a single by Richardson and a triple by
Maris in the first inning. The Sox got that run back on a base hit by
Joe Foy and a triple to deep right by George Smith in the second
inning.
Rico Petrocelli singled in the third and was forced at second by
Gosger. Carl Yastrzemski line a doubled to right and Gosger held at
third. George Scott's sacrifice fly brought home Gosger with the
go-ahead second run.
New York tied the game up in the sixth inning. Santiago walked Howard
with one out and Hector Lopez moved him over to third with a base hit
to center. Ray Barker's fly ball let Howard score, to make the score
two apiece.
But in the Sox half of the sixth inning, the Red Sox re-took the
lead. Scott reached first base safely when Clete Boyer booted his
grounder. Tony Conigliaro next doubled off the wall and Foy was
intentionally walked to load the bases. Smith came thru again with a
sac fly to center to put the Sox up 3 to 2.
Mel Stottlemyre started for the Yankees and was followed by Pedro
Ramos in the seventh inning, who left after two innings, being taken
out for a pinch hitter in the ninth. Next came Hal Reniff who pitched
five scoreless innings, before giving way to Womack.
Bob Tillman started the final inning with a smash off the left field
wall, that just missed going out by a few feet. It clanged off the
Green Monster, bounced back, and Scotty hustled into second base. Ken
Sander's attempt at a sacrifice was spoiled when Womack was able to
get Tillman at third base. Rico Petrocelli hit a ground ball into
left field to put Sanders on second and himself on first, bringing up
Gosger. |
