THE CURSE OF THE BAMBINO, PART 6 ... August 12, 1967 ... The fading Red Sox dropped into fourth place, by losing a 2 to 1 game to the Angels at Anaheim Stadium. It was a sixth loss in eight games, on the road trip, for the Red Sox. They have scored only five runs in the losses. The losing pitcher was Gary Bell, who went six innings and gave up both runs on five hits, including a home run by Don Mincher. Many of the outs were also line drive shots. Jack Hamilton pitched the first six innings for the Angels, allowing six hits and a run. It was his first victory over the Red Sox. In the first inning, Joe Foy blooped a one-out single to center, but was cut down attempting to steal with Tony Conigliaro at the plate, to end the inning. Bell retired the Angels, in order, in the first inning, but everyone smashed the ball hard. José Cardenal lined one out to Carl Yastrzemski in left, Jim Fregosi lined one at Foy and Jimmie Hall sent Conigliaro to the wall with a shot to right. Mincher put the Angels ahead in the second inning by hitting the first pitch over the 375 foot sign in right-center. It was his 18th home run of the year. The Red Sox tied it up in the next inning, when Reggie Smith led off with a single and moved up on Bell's sacrifice bunt. After Mike Andrews popped out, Joe Foy slammed a single to left that drove in Smith. Yaz doubled into left-field corner to send Foy to third, but Conigliaro bounced out to end the inning. In the sixth inning, the Angels broke the tie when Tom Satriano, batting for Hamilton, doubled past third base into the left-field corner. José Cardenal sacrificed with a squeeze bunt, moving pinch runner Rick Reichardt over to third, where he scored on a base hit by Jim Fregosi. Minnie Rojas came into pitch for the Angels in the seventh and Petrocelli greeted him with a single to center. Elston Howard sacrificed him to second and he went to third on Reggie Smith's ground ball. However Dalton Jones, who batted for Bell, grounded out to end the threat. John Wyatt came in and retired the Angels in order during the seventh and eighth innings, striking out three. But Rojas was just as tough on the Red Sox, notching his 21st save of the year. |
