“DIARY OF A WINNER”

THE CURSE OF THE BAMBINO, PART 6 ...
"THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM"
Stephenson pitches a gem for the 1st place Sox

August 26, 1967 ... The Red Sox keep moving in and out of first place and today they were back there again after defeating the Chicago White Sox, 6 to 2. For five innings, Jerry Stephenson didn't give the White Sox and hit. But in the sixth, he got wild and suddenly tired. Meanwhile the Red Sox disposed of Joe Horlen, Chicago's top pitcher very early in the game.

The Red Sox broke out fast with some base hits off Horlen. In the third inning they got their first two runs. José Tartabull started it by hitting a line drive and Rocky Colavito in right field. Rocky stumbled as the ball finally fell at his feet. He slipped and fell as Wayne Causey ran out to get the ball. Meanwhile Tartabull was circling the bases and ended up at third-base.

The next three pitches by Horlen all resulted in base hits. Jerry Adair was first, then came Carl Yastrzemski and finally another by George Scott. All were singles and two more runs scored. Eddie Stanky, the Chicago manager, came out to the mound but left Horlen in.

Horlen was still on the mound the next inning when he walked Mike Andrews and Mike Ryan and one out at Colavito once again. His long fly ball floated away from Rocky and rolled all the way to the fence for a triple, scoring Andrews with the Red Sox third run.

The White Sox put on their first real threat in the bottom of the fourth without a base hit. Stephenson walked Don Buford at the start and after Causey grounded out, he walked Pete Ward. Stanky order to double steal and Mike Ryan cut down Buford third with a perfect throw. Ken Boyer lofted a fly to centerfield and the threat was over.

The Red Sox added two more runs in the fifth to help Stephenson, when Adair singled for the second time of the game. Yaz grounded out but then Scott and Smith singled again. George Scott now has eight hits in the series so far and Smith at seven. At this point Horlen was yanked and in came Wilbur wood. Rico Petrocelli greeted his former teammate with a double that scored the second run of the inning and put the Sox on top 5 to 0.

Stephenson struck out Ken Berry to open the sixth but that allowed a base hit to Don Buford. Buford scored on a double by Wayne Causey and went to third on a groundout. Boyer scored him on a base hit and that was the afternoon for Stephenson. Darrell Brandon finished the inning by getting Colavito on a groundout, but then ran into trouble in the seventh.

With two outs, Tommy John, the White Sox pitcher got a base hit and Mike Andrews booted a ground ball by Berry. Buford beat out a bunt to load the bases, but Brandon struck out Causey to get himself out of the jam.

The Red Sox scored their last run when Reggie Smith's grounder popped over Causey's shoulder for a base hit. He went to third on a wild pickoff throw and after a walk to Petrocelli, Andrews hit a fly ball to left that scored the sixth run of the afternoon.

The win went to Jerry Stephenson, who was now won two games since being brought back from Toronto.
