“DIARY OF A WINNER”

THE CURSE OF THE BAMBINO, PART 6 ...
"THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM"
Yaz ties the game up and
Dalton Jones wins it in the 10th

September 18, 1967 ... With 42,674 Tiger fans looking on, Dalton Jones slammed a home run into the upper deck of right field in the 10th inning at Tiger Stadium, to give the Red Sox a 6 to 5 win over the Tigers.

The Sox started off against Denny McLain with three runs in the first inning. José Tartabull walked and after Mike Andrews grounded out, Carl Yastrzemski lined a double to left-center. Reggie Smith reached on an infield single and then stole second. A sacrifice fly by George Scott scored Yaz with the second run. Jones lined a single to right that scored Reggie.

Jerry Stephenson couldn't get a fastball by Norm Cash in the second inning, and he slugged his 20th home run with one out, after a double by Bill Freehan and a walk to Don Wert. Cash's homer tied up the game at 3 to 3.

In the third inning McLain walked Andrews, the first batter. Yaz singled to center and Andrews went to third, scoring on Reggie's fly ball to center, putting the Sox up 4 to 3. McLain walked Scott and Jones singled to left, but Petrocelli ended the inning with a fly ball.

Cash had Stephenson's number in this game. Again, in the sixth inning, he lined another home run deep into the seats in right and it was tied again at 4 to 4.

Then in the eighth-inning, with the score tied, and John Wyatt on the mound, the Tigers scored a run to give them the lead. Al Kaline walked to start the inning and after a sacrifice bunt by Willie Horton, Jim Northrup lined a double to left field that scored Kaline.

Up came the Red Sox for their last chance in the ninth-inning, down a run. Lasher struck out Mike Andrews for the first out. Yastrzemski was next and he smashed his 40th home run into the second deck in right to tie up the game. That took it into extra innings and set the stage for Dalton Jones.

The victory put the Red Sox, the Twins and the Tigers in a three-way tie for first place with the White Sox a half game behind.
