THE SOX STUMBLE AND
FALL AT THE END ...
The Sox clobber the Rangers, 12-0

The Red Sox bombed the former Washington Senators, now wearing Texas
uniforms, 12 to 0, behind a three hitter tossed by Sonny Siebert. The
Red Sox had a slugging attack with Reggie Smith hitting two home runs
and Rico Petrocelli and Danny Cater each hitting one. Siebert had a
no-hitter going for five innings, until Ted Kubiak, pinch-hitting for Pete
Broberg, hit a line drive down the right-field line, to open up the sixth
inning. Reggie chased after the ball but it was a couple yards away from his
reach and went for a double. Kubiak later hit a double down the left-field line
in the eighth-inning, just to prove his first one was not a fluke.
Broberg couldn't get by five innings. Reggie his first home run in the first
inning with a man on. A single, and hit batsman and a double by Tommy Harper
brought in two more runs in the second inning.
When Reggie singled in the fifth and Petrocelli almost knocked down one of
the light standards in left field, Broberg was lifted for Jim Shellenback. He
faced Danny Cater, who hit a fly down the left-field line that snuck over the
wall into the net close to the foul line. It was the first time the Red Sox had
hit back-to-back home runs this year and it wasn't over yet.
Smith hit another home run in the seventh when the Red Sox scored four times.
Carlton Fisk had walked and Siebert reached, when his bunt was misplayed for an
error by Don Mincher. After an infield out by Harper, Luis Aparicio doubled to
centerfield and Smith hit his second home run after Rick Miller had fanned.
The shutout was the 15th of Siebert's career, the seventh he had pitched for
the Red Sox, and his second this year.
Manager Ted Williams, who had been platooning Frank Howard, decided he might
as well let him have another few swings at the left-field fence. Howard had his
swings, many healthy ones, but he struck out three times and drew a walk. |
