Reggie Smith's 2 HRs give the Sox a walk-off win

July 16, 1973 ... Reggie Smith was back in center field for the Red Sox after being out for over a week with a sore knee. He hit two home runs, one into the net in left, in the first inning for two runs, and another into the right field grandstand.

The White Sox gave the Red Sox quite a tustle until Smith's long last deep into the night. Cy Acosta was on the mound for the White Sox and had two men out and two strikes and no balls on Smith in the first inning. It was a fastball up and in that Reggie deposited over the left-field wall to give the Sox a 2 to 1 lead.

The Red Sox started John Curtis, who had done very well against the White Sox this year, but tonight he got banged around. So did the White Sox starter Bart Johnson.

Smith's homer in the first inning came after a double by Luis Aparicio, the first of his three hits. The White Sox had scored one in their half of the inning when John Jeter doubled and Luis Alvarado singled.

Then in the third inning, Curtis gave up two home runs, one to Jeter, that started the inning and the second to Ken Henderson, after singles by Carlos May and Bill Melton, that put the White Sox up 5 to 2. But in the Red Sox half of the third, they got two runs back. Tommy Harper drew a walk and doubles by Carl Yastrzemski and Orlando Cepeda made the score 5 to 4.

In the next inning Tommy Harper homered with two men on, to give the Red Sox a 7 to 5 lead. The White Sox came back and got a run off Rogelio Moret in the eighth-inning on two doubles, and it was at that point that Bob Bolin came in to end the threat.

The Red Sox produced another run in the eighth that looked like it might be enough. Carlton Fisk walked, stole second and scored on Doug Griffin single behind second base, with Eddie Leon's throws skipping past Herrmann.

So the Red Sox had an 8 to 6 lead going into the ninth-inning. After Leon fanned to start the ninth, Tony Muser lined a single to left and Herrmann hit a home run around the Pesky Pole, tying up the game at 8 to 8.

Then came the 11th inning and Reggie Smith slammed his second home run of the night into the right field grandstand for a walkoff 9 to 8 win.
