CARLTON FISK HOMERS |
HOW TO BLOW A SEVEN GAME LEAD ...
The Sox win a nail-biter from the A's
June 11, 1974
...
With Sal Bando and Reggie Jackson up in the seventh inning and the
score tied at 4 to 4, with one out, Sox pitcher Diego Segui got both
sluggers out on a pop up and a strikeout.
But there were other frustrating moments for the Oakland Athletics.
Catfish Hunter served up three home run balls before he was lifted.
Rick Miller hit his second homer of the year in the second inning.
Cecil Cooper hit his fourth in the third inning and Carlton Fisk hit
his ninth in the sixth inning, into the centerfield seats. Then in
the bottom of the seventh-inning with the score still tied, the Sox got five
runs to open it up. After Miller flied out and Dick McAuliffe walked, Mac stole
second base. Manager Darrell Johnson sent Danny Cater to the plate and he
delivered after fouling off six pitches. He sliced a double down the right-field
line and the Sox were ahead to stay.
But the A's weren't going down without a fight, getting five runs in the
ninth-inning. They knocked out Segui and Bob Veale came in with men on first and
second, one out, and Gene Tenace at bat. Veale threw a pitch behind him and
catcher Carlton Fisk made one of the most clutch saves of the year, preventing
any advancement. Veale then struck him out as and also the next batter, Angel
Mangual, to save the game for the Red Sox, 10 to 9. |
