TONY CONIGLIARO |
THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
The Sox and Tony C. beat Hank Aaron
and the Brewers on opening day at Fenway
April 8, 1975
...
Bob Montgomery doubled home two runs in a three run third inning and
Tony Conigliaro made a triumphant return to the major league as the
Red Sox defeated the Milwaukee Brewers, 5 to 2, and spoiling the
American league debut of the Brewers' Hank Aaron. Aaron and
Conigliaro received standing ovations when they were introduced. Aaron was the
Brewers designated hitter and walked, struck out and grounded out twice.
Conigliaro helped the Red Sox to a first inning run with a hit-and-run single
that sent Carl Yastrzemski to third. Yaz and scored on the front end of the
double steal.
Singles by Dwight Evans, Montgomery and Doug Griffin made the score 2 to 0 in
the second inning and the Red Sox wrapped it up in the third off Jim Slaton on a
double by Carl Yastrzemski, a walk, a double by Bob Montgomery and a base hit by
Rick Burleson.
Luis Tiant was the winning pitcher and gave up a second inning home run to
Robin Yount and another run in the fourth on George Scott's double and Darrell
Porter's single. He pitched masterfully in going the route while being helped
the little by doubleplays in the third inning and the ninth-inning, when the
Brewers threatened.
It was the kind of afternoon where Red Sox fans forget the cold and the wind.
They cheered good hits, Tiant's pitching and even a lot of fall balls hit into
the left-field stands. But the Red Sox looked sharp, played errorless ball and
manager Darrell Johnson appeared to be well pleased with his outfield of Juan
Beniquez, Fred Lynn and Dwight Evans. |
