THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER

Carl Yastrzemski's HR gives the
Sox the win

Carl Yastrzemski's home run into the right-field bleachers in the
12th inning gave the Red Sox a 6 to 5 victory over the Baltimore
Orioles. Rick Burleson sent the game into extra innings for the Red
Sox with a two-out home run in the eighth-inning off Doyle Alexander
to tie the score at 5 to 5. Despite the score, a day of
embarrassment in centerfield for Juan Beniquez, took away what should've been an
easy victory. Wise had a 2 to 0 lead in the fourth when Beniquez ran down and
simply missed a fly ball from Lee May, then dived and played a Don Baylor single
into a triple. Instead of runners on first and second, it tied the score at 2 to
2. Beniquez also did make a superb running catch.
A home run by Tony Conigliaro, his first since 1971, gave the Red Sox a 3 to
2 lead in the fifth inning. The Red Sox made it 4 to 2 in the sixth when Jim
Rice tripled and scored on a single by Doug Griffin. Bob Montgomery's single had
produced two runs off a wild Mike Cuellar in the first inning, before Tony C hit
his home run in the fifth.
Paul Blair's two run single led a three run Baltimore rally in the sixth
inning to give the Orioles a 5 to 4 lead. Pinch-hitter, Jim Northrup's sacrifice
fly with the bases loaded scored the first run of the rally. After Ken Singleton
walked to reload the bases, Blair lined his single off Rick Wise.
There are a lot of things for the Red Sox fans to be pleased about, starting
with a good but unlucky, nine innings pitched by Rick Wise and of course the
three home runs. It was the first time the Red Sox had three home runs in one
game since July 25th of last year.
Yastrzemski's game-winning homer broke up what had been a good pitchers duel
between relievers Doyle Alexander and Diego Segui. Segui worked three shutout
innings for his first win of the year and was helped in the 11th inning by a
smart piece of strategy. With Paul Blair on first and one out, Segui pitched out
twice in a row. The second time Blair was running and Bob Montgomery gunned
Blair down. |
