THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Bill Lee just misses a shutout
but wins his third straight
May 28, 1975
...
Bill Lee hurled a four-hitter, giving up his first hit in the
fifth inning, but missed his third straight shutout on his own
throwing error, pitching the Sox to a 4 to 1 victory over the Rangers
and Ferguson Jenkins. He issued a one-out walk in the first inning
but didn't allow another baserunner until Tom Grieve's two-out single
in the fifth inning.
Down 4 to 0, Jim Fregosi got an infield hit in the seventh as Lee ran
his string of scoreless innings to 28. But Leo Cardenas opened the
Texas eighth with a single and went to third on an error by Doug
Griffin. After Jim Sundburg flied out, Cardenas scored an unearned
run on Lee's wild pickoff throw to first.
Jenkins was touched for single runs in the second, third, fourth and
fifth innings. Tim Blackwell singled home the first Sox run in the
second following a double by Jim Rice.
Rice knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly in the third inning, after a
single to center by Fred Lynn and a walk to Carl Yastrzemski, who has
31 walks in 38 games. Bernie Carbo doubled Blackwell home in the
fourth inning and Dwight Evans laced a run scoring double that
brought in Rice in the fifth inning.
Lee has been close to being the best pitcher in the league. He is 6-1
with a 1.94 ERA over the last month and a .121 batting average
against him, earning himself the A.L. Player of the Week.
Dwight Evans made three excellent catches, two of them foul territory
and on one foul catch, the Rangers wouldn't break for home, even
though Evan's skidded on the muddy turf. |
