THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER

The Sox fall to the Twins

Minnesota's Eric Soderholm
had three hits and drove in two runs to lead the
Minnesota Twins to a 4 to 3 victory over the Red Sox. Walks, three
Sox errors and four stolen bases by the Twins sealed the loss.
Steve Braun cracked his fourth homer of the season to lead off the
fifth inning and spot Twins' starter, Dave Goltz, to a 1-0 lead.
Soderholm singled in another run in the fifth inning off Diego Segui,
who came in to replace Sox starter, Dick Pole, who issued walks to
Bobby Darwin and Larry Hisle after Braun's homer.
Fred Lynn belted his seventh homer of the season with Carl
Yastrzemski on board, in the sixth inning, to tie the game at 2-2.
Tony Oliva knocked in Rod Carew, who singled and stole second, going
to third on Tim Blackwell's wild throw, that went into center field,
in the seventh inning. Sergio Ferrer came in to run for Oliva and
stole second before scoring on Soderholm's single to center, to put
the Twins back on top, 4 to 2.
The Sox chased Goltz in the ninth inning on successive singles by
Blackwell and pinch hitter, Cecil Cooper. Twins reliever Tom
Burgmeier came in and got Tony Conigliaro on a sacrifice fly that
scored Blackwell, and then struck out Yaz to end the game.
Blackwell dropped a foul pop and was off-line on all his throws. Doug
Griffin made an error, waived at two balls he usually gets and made a
baserunning blunder. |
