Dick
Pole's three-hitter stymies Chicago
June 3,
1975 ...
Jim Rice drilled a three-run homer in the first inning and
then Dick Pole made it stand up by hurling a three-hitter at the
Chicago White Sox, beating them 4 to 0.
Pole, making only his second start of the season, filling in for
Reggie Cleveland, pitched his first career complete game. He struck
out eight and walked three. The only White Sox hits were a bunt
single by Pat Kelly in the third inning, a line single to left by
Bill Melton in the fifth inning and a triple that bounced off the
wall by Jorge Orta in the ninth.
Lloyd Allen, making his first start for Chicago since being called up
from the minors, retired the first two batters he faced, then walked
Carl Yastrzemski and Fred Lynn. Rice then lined a 1-0 pitch into the
left field screen for his ninth homer of the year. The Sox got their
fourth run in the fifth inning. Juan Beniquez scored Lynn with a base
hit off Chicago reliever Bill Gogolewski.
Orta started the ninth with a triple that skipped past Fred Lynn.
Pole the retired the side to register his shutout. He needed 111
pitches in two hours and two minutes.
In addition to his home run, Rice also registered a single to extend
his hitting streak to eight games. Lynn's single extended his hitting
streak eight games. The Red Sox managed six hits but were given nine
free passes. They had one runner thrown out at the plate and left 12
men on base. It was the Sox 11th victory in 15 games. |
