Dwight Evans slam two HRs as Sox hold on

June 6, 1975 ... Dwight Evans drove in six runs with a pair of homers, one was the first grand slam of his major league career, as the Red Sox held on to win 13 to 10, over the Twins. Minnesota out-hit the Sox, 14-8, but their pitchers had little control, walking nine Sox batters.

Evans belted the grandslam after Minnesota's Joe Decker had walked the bases loaded in the first inning. Then he connected for a second home run off reliever, Mike Pazik in the third inning.

In that first inning, Decker walked Bernie Carbo to start, but Rick Burleson grounded into a doubleplay. Decker next walked Carl Yastrzemski and wild pitched him to second. Decker couldn't find the plate and gave both Fred Lynn and Jim Rice free passes to loaded the bases and set the stage for Evans.

Down 4-0, the Twins pounced on Luis Tiant for three runs in the second inning. A double by Tony Oliva and a base hit by Larry Hisle started the inning. Danny Thompson grounded to Burleson, bringing in Oliva. After a base hit by Jerry Terrell, Glenn Borgmann doubled off the wall to score Thompson. Terrell moved to third and Tiant walked Steve Braun to load the bases. Another walk to Rod Carew scored Terrell and the Sox lead was cut to one run, 4-3.

In the third inning, the Twins took the lead, 5-4. Oliva tied the game up with a home run to start the inning. Hisle reached safely on a drag bunt and stole second, scoring the go-ahead run on Tom Kelly's double off the wall.

But down 5 to 4, the Sox nailed down the win with five runs in their half of the third inning. Yaz got one of his three walks in the game, and Lynn singled to right. Jim Rice doubled them both home before coming in on Evans second blast onto Lansdowne Street. Monty followed and doubled to right and then scored on an error by Thompson on a ball that he threw into the dugout, putting the Sox up 9 to 5.

The Sox scored their tenth run in the fifth inning. Evans walked and Doug Griffin singled. Heise brought in Evans on a suicide squeeze. Tiant gave up two more runs in the fifth inning before Rogelio Moret took over.

The final two runs for the Sox came when Monty was hit by a pitch, Griffin walked and Heise singled. Monty scored on the hit and Juan Beniquez walked. That brought in Bill Campbell for Minnesota, who allowed a two-run double to Burleson, making the score 13 to 7.

The Twins hit Moret for three runs in the eighth inning on Danny Walton's double, to make it 13-10. Dick Drago came in for a 1-2-3 inning and his fifth save.

Tony Oliva had three hits including his third homer of the season. Larry Hisle also had three hits, but American League batting leader, Rod Carew, who entered the game with 15 hits in his last 18 at bats, was handcuffed by Tiant and Moret, having his hitting streak ended at 11 games.

The two teams banged out 93 hits and 70 runs in their last four games. Tiant has been the recipient of 40 of those runs, but still is having control issues, giving up 10 hits and 7 runs in five innings.
