The Orioles overcome the Sox

July 1, 1975 ... Don Baylor broke a 6-6 tie by crushing a three-run homer in the seventh inning off Reggie Cleveland, and powering the Baltimore Orioles to a 10-6 win over the Red Sox. He unloaded his 10th homer of the year off one of the light towers above the left field wall after Lee May had singled with one out, and Paul Blair beat out an infield hit down the third base line.

Bernie Carbo put the Sox out in front with a solo homer in the third inning. The Orioles came back in the fourth inning with two runs on a walk, a triple by May and a groundout to take a 2-1 lead.

The Sox then spoiled the major league debut of Paul Mitchell with four runs in the fourth inning. Doubles by Carl Yastrzemski and Fred Lynn, singles by Jim Rice and Carlton Fisk sent Mitchell packing. Ross Grimsley came in to face Denny Doyle who sent a squeeze bunt his way that allowed Rice to score. Singles by Bob Heise and Bernie Carbo brought in Fisk, giving the Sox a 5-2 lead.

The Orioles evened the score with three runs in the fifth against Dick Drago, who was making his first start of the season.

A single by Yaz and a double by Lynn, put the Sox back on top in the fifth and ended the game for Grimsley. Wayne Garland came in and stopped any further scoring.

In the sixth inning, Brooks Robinson drew a walk off Cleveland, Belanger moved him over to third with a base hit and the Ken Singleton sent a line drive toward the bullpens. Carbo raced over and reached into the Orioles bullpen, robbing Singleton of a three-run homer. Robinson easily tagged and scored the tying run, 6-6.

The Sox loaded the bases in their half of the sixth, on a walk by Carbo, a double by Rick Burleson and an intentional pass to Yaz. Grant Jackson came in to get Fred Lynn on a foul pop and end the threat. In the seventh the Sox threatened again when Rice started the inning with a base hit. Juan Beniquez then came in to pinch hit another single. Jackson put out that fire, stranding the two runners with three straight outs.

Baltimore's tenth run came in the eight inning when May doubled home Bobby Grich, who had walked.
