A SEASON TO REMEMBER

Fisk & Rice key a rally in the
first game
of a doubleheader split
September 7, 1975
...
Carlton Fisk's tie-breaking double in a two-run eighth inning
and Jim Rice's two-run single in the ninth inning, gave the Sox a 6
to 3 win in the first game of a doubleheader with the Brewers. George
Scott's 3-run homer gave the Brewers a 7 to 3 victory in the second
game.
Scott's 28th homer, with Don Money and Bob Sheldon aboard, erased a
2-1 Sox advantage in the fifth inning. The Sox had scored one run on
a walk, a single by Fisk and a groundout in the second inning. Their
second run was unearned and came in the third inning on an error, a
stolen base, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly. After Scott's homer
off Dick Pole, which put Milwaukee up by two runs, 4-2, the Sox
closed the gap on Rice's leadoff homer off Bill Travers in the sixth
inning. Three more Brewer runs cinched the game in the eighth off Jim
Willoughby.
Down 2-1 in the opener, singles by Denny Doyle, who had three hits,
and Carl Yastrzemski started the eighth inning and chased Jim Colborn.
Fred Lynn's forceout grounder off Rick Austin, tied the game when
Doyle scored, and one out later, Fisk tagged Eduardo Rodriguez with a
double off the left field wall, to give the Sox a 3-2 lead.
The Sox got their first run the inning before, on a single by Fisk, a
double by Bernie Carbo and Rick Burleson's grounder. They scored
three more off Rodriguez in the ninth inning, on Doyle' double, a hit
batsman, Lynn's double and Rice's two-run single.
Bill Sharp's homer in the ninth off Dick Drago made the final score
6-3. Drago earned his 11th save after pitching out of trouble in the
eighth inning. The Brewers had two men on off Reggie Cleveland. Bill
Lee came in to face to face Hank Aaron who loaded the bases on an
error by Doyle. Drago then came in and ended the threat by getting
Charlie Moore to groundout.
Cecil Cooper was hit on the side of his face in the fifth inning of
the second game and carried off the field on a stretcher, before
being taken to the hospital for x-rays which were negative. |
