THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
1975
WORLD SERIES, GAME #2
The Red
Sox come-from-behind
to go up two games
October 5,
1975 ...
The real Oakland Athletics showed up at Fenway Park, but once
again the Red Sox refused to be awed by the presence of the
three-time World Series champions, coming from behind to win 6 to 3,
and gain a 2-0 advantage in the best of five series.
Reggie Cleveland started the game for the Sox, but gave up a two-run
homer to Reggie Jackson in the first inning. Joe Rudi and Claudell
Washington hit back-to-back doubles in the fourth inning to put the
A's ahead by three runs.
Led by Carl Yastrzemski to Sox overcame a 3-0 deficit to belt the
proud Athletics once again. Yaz got the Sox going when he slugged a
fast ball from Vida Blue into the left-centerfield screen in the
fourth inning with Denny Doyle aboard. Carlton Fisk followed with a
double and Fred Lynn with a single, ending the game for Blue. Jim
Todd came in and got Rico Petrocelli to ground into a doubleplay, but
it scored Fisk with the game tying run.
Rogelio Moret came in for Cleveland after Bando singled in the sixth
and got credit for the win when the Sox pulled ahead for good in the
bottom of the inning. Yaz doubled off the wall and scored on Fisk's
base hit to center for one run. The next inning Petrocelli homered
for a single run, and in the eighth inning Juan Beniquez led off with
a base hit, was sacrificed to second and scored on Lynn's base hit.
Defense shined for the Sox also. Lynn outraced a Joe Rudi
flyball to deep center in the the ninth inning. In the third inning,
Yaz made a brilliant throw to nail Bert Campaneris at third to kill a
threat, and in the sixth, Yaz held Bando to a single after he drove
the ball off the wall in left field. |
