Rick Burleson doubled in two runs in the ninth inning and
scored on a sacrifice fly by Carl Yastrzemski as the Red Sox edged
the Yankees, 5 to 4.
Sparky Lyle, who relieved Yankees starter Dock Ellis in the eighth,
walked Dwight Evans and Butch Hobson to start the ninth inning. He
was replaced by Dick Tidrow who got Bob Montgomery on a bouncer back
to him. But then Burleson unloaded a line drive to deep center,
scoring Evans and Hobson. A base hit by Denny Doyle and an
intentional pass to Cecil Cooper loaded the bases. Grant Jackson took
over from Tidrow and Yaz lofted a flyball to center that let Burleson
sprint home with the game winner.
The Yanks got two quick runs to start the game when Mickey Rivers
doubled, went to third on a sacrifice back to the mound, before
Thurman Munson unloaded a homer into the left field nets.
Burleson solved Ellis when he led off the fourth inning, with a line
drive to left. Doyle (4-for-4) followed with a double and Burleson
scored on Cecil Cooper's sacrifice fly. Doyle came home with the
tying run, on Jim Rice's base hit.
Tied 2 to 2, Lou Piniella led off the sixth inning with a double off
starter, Rick Jones. Fran Healy drove him home with a base hit off
Bill Lee. In the eighth, Healy again touched Lee for a single that
scored Piniella, who had singled and moved up a base on Lee's wild
pitch, That put the Yankees up 4 to 2 until the bottom of the ninth.
Rick Miller made an outstanding play in centerfield, with a leaping
back-to-the-plate catch off the wall to snag a line drive from Munson
with two men on base. |
