THE SOX BATS RUMBLE,
BUT THE PITCHING STUMBLES ...
The Sox prove that no lead is safe at Fenway

May 21, 1977 ... Dwight Evans barreled into secondbaseman Don Money, breaking up an attempted doubleplay and permitting Carlton Fisk to score the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning, as the Sox battled to become victorious, 10 to 9 over the Brewers.

Evans jarred the ball loose and Fisk, who had stopped at third base, sprinted home easily. That ended a four-run ninth inning rally, triggered by Jim Rice's homer high off the wall behind the centerfield bleachers off Bill Castro, who had retired seven straight batters.

Carl Yastrzemski followed that with his third hit, a single to right center, and took second when Von Joshua bobbled the ball. George Scott then doubled to score Yaz and Castro walked Fisk. Evans followed with a single to center that scored Scott with the tying run and put Fisk on second.

Butch Hobson bounced a ball down to thirdbaseman Sal Bando who, thought about going after Fisk, but threw to second, forcing Evans who proceeded to put Money on his back, with the ball rolling gently into shallow center.

The Brewers started the game by jumping out to a 4-0 lead off Bob Stanley. Two walks and a double loaded the bases and Charlie Moore's doubled scored two runners. Two more then scored when Butch Hobson threw Robin Yount's grounder past George Scott at first.

The Sox tied the score in their half of the second inning. Moose Haas walked Fisk to start the inning and Evans beat out a bunt. Charlie Moore's passed ball moved both runners up and Haas walked Hobson to load the bases, His problem compounded when he walked both Denny Doyle and Rick Burleson, giving the Sox two free runs. Fred Lynn's fly ball to right then scored Hobson while Doyle scampered over to third, scoring on Rice's fly ball.

The Brewers went back out in front, 5-4, the next inning on doubles by Sixto Lezcano and Cecil Cooper. In the bottom of the fifth the Sox tied up the game once again. Sam Hinds was now pitching for the Brewers and walked Fisk. Evans double put runners on second and third. Hobson singled through the right side of the infield and Lezcano threw out Fisk trying to score. Evans moved to third on the throw and scored the go-ahead run while Hobson tried to steal second, changed his mind and got caught in a rundown.

But the Brewers went ahead the next inning. A single by Moore, a sac bunt by Yount and a double by Money, scored Moore with the go-ahead run. Bill Campbell came in for Stanley and struck out Lezcano, but Bando's double down the right field line put Milwaukee up by two runs, 7 to 5.

A home run by Yaz cut the Brewers' lead back down to one run, in the seventh inning. But Campbell gave that run back and one more in the eighth inning by giving up a base hit, a walk, and a double to Bando that scored both runners. Tom House took over to get the final out, but the Sox were temporarily now losing, 9 to 6.
