THE SOX BATS RUMBLE,
BUT THE PITCHING STUMBLES ...
Fisk's walk-off hit, leads
the Sox into first place
June 13,
1977 ...
Carlton Fisk's third hit of the game put the Sox in
first place for the first time since the final day of the season in
1975. Fisk gave the Red Sox a 5 to 4 walk-off 10th inning win over
the White Sox, with a line single to center, that scored Rick
Burleson.
Rick Miller had dropped down a perfect bunt to advance Burleson, who
had drawn a walk from Larry Anderson. Anderson wild pitched Burleson
to third before Fisk lined the game winner over the head of the
drawn-in centerfielder, Wayne Nordhagen.
Bill Campbell picked up his 5th win with his 20th straight stellar
relief job. Denny Doyle made a great play to start an inning-ending
doubleplay in the sixth inning with the score tied.
The Red Sox were trailing, 4 to 2, going into the eighth inning but
tied the game on a single by Burleson, a triple from Jim Rice that
scored him and a sacrifice fly by Yaz that scored Rice. Then Campbell
came in to shut down the White Sox until the tenth inning game
winner.
Before the heroics, Richie Zisk had broken up a 2-2 tie in the
seventh inning with a two run homer into the left-centerfield screen,
to also put him out front in the AL home run race with 16 dingers.
The win, the Red Sox' fifth straight and eight in nine games, put
them in first place, 1/2 game ahead of the Yankees. |
