...
Butch Hobson doubled home two runs to finish a
three-run ninth inning, giving the Red Sox a 10-9 see-saw victory
over the Seattle Mariners. Fred Lynn went 5-for-5 and scored four
runs, in game marred by the beaning of Dwight Evans.
Evans was hit by
Mike Parrott and carried from the field unconscious in the seventh
inning. He regained consciousness and was taken to New England
Baptist Hospital for observation.
Trailing 1-0, the Sox took the lead with three runs in the 2nd
inning. Singles by Carlton Fisk and Fred Lynn preceded a double by
Evans and another by Hobson, to put the Sox up 3-1. But the Mariners
re-took the lead with three runs of their own on three doubles and a
triple off Mike Torrez, 4-3, in the third inning.
Jim Rice smashed his 34th home run in Sox half of the third inning.
Carl Yastrzemski then followed with a base hit, but was erased by a
doubleplay. Lynn next tripled and was brought home by Evans' second
double of the game, giving the Sox the lead back, 5-4.
The Sox added another run in the fifth inning. Yaz led off with a
double, Fisk received a free pass and Lynn's base hit scored Yaz with
the 6th Sox run. The Mariners got that run back in the seventh
inning. Bill Lee hit Craig Reynolds with a pitch and would later
score on a sacrifice fly.
Lynn's fourth base hit in the seventh inning was followed by the
pitch that hit Dwight Evans in the head. George Scott scored Lynn
with a double, to put the Sox up 7 to 5.
Seattle took the lead in the eighth inning with three runs, and a run
in the ninth inning on two singles and Rick Burleson's error.
Trailing 9 to 7, in the bottom of the ninth inning, Lynn lined his
fourth single to start, moved to second on Garry Hancock's base hit,
and scored when firstbaseman Dan Meyer threw George Scott's sacrifice
bunt past third base. Hobson the doubled home Hancock and Scott with
the tying and winning runs for the walk-off win. |
